What We Know About the Recall

On October 8, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. of Denver, CO announced a recall involving certain seafood products, including trout, salmon, and cod. Routine testing found that samples from Northeast Seafood Products were positive for the strain of Salmonella Thompson involved in the October 2021 outbreak. The seafood was sold raw, fresh, and unpackaged in the fresh seafood case.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop symptoms which include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever

Most illnesses occur within 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated food, and most people remain ill for 4 to 7 days. People that have underlying GI issues may be affected more severely, as well as immunocompromised and elderly people.

Per the FDA, the products impacted by the recall include Haddock, Monkfish, Grouper, Bone-in Trout, Red Rock Cod, Ocean Perch, Pacific Cod, Halibut, Coho Salmon, Atlantic Salmon Portions, Red Snapper, Lane Snapper, Tilapia, All Natural Salmon Fillet, Pacific Sole, and Farm Raised Striped Bass.

What We Know About the Salmonella Outbreak

Recalled seafood distributed by Northeast Seafood Products of Denver, Colorado has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Thompson. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state and local agencies, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections linked to seafood sold by Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. of Denver, CO. According to the CDC, the majority of people who became ill are either residents of Colorado, or have reported traveling to Colorado during the week they became ill.

The October 8 FDA communication reports that samples collected from Northeast Seafood Products tested positive for Salmonella Thompson and were found to be a match to the strain identified in the outbreak. As of the CDC’s Food Safety Alert dated October 8, 2021, there have been 102 reported illnesses with 19 hospitalizations.

Lawsuits
