What We Know About the Oylmel Ham Recall

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) posted an announcement on April 15, 2021 alerting consumers to the recall, which involves more than 6,000 pounds of ham. The Salmonella Enteritidis contamination was discovered during collection of a routine product import sample. So far, no illnesses have been reported. The FSIS says customers should check their refrigerator or freezer and should not consume these products.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop symptoms which include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever

Most illnesses occur within 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated food and most people remain ill for 4 to 7 days. People with underlying GI issues may be affected more severely, as well as immunocompromised and elderly people.

Products Involved in Oylmel Ham Recall

The ham products involved in the Salmonella Enteritidis recall were packaged on November 5, 2020. The ham products were produced by Olymel S.E.C./L.P., of Quebec, Canada. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Ham products involved in the recall:

  • 12-lb. plastic film vacuum package of “Celebrity EXTRA LEAN IMPORTED HAM 98% FAT FREE” with product codes “20309 11 – 91”, “20309 21 – 91”, “20309 31 – 91”, “20309 41 – 91” or “20309 51 – 91” printed on the side of the packaging.

The FSIS says the products subject to recall list Canadian establishment number 180 inside the Canadian inspection mark located below the ingredient list. These items were shipped to distributors in California for further distribution for institutional use. Additional products may be added to this list.

Lawsuits

These lawsuits are not part of a class action or multi-district litigation (MDL). Each case is unique and remains separate from other cases. The statute of limitations to sue may be only one or two years after the purchase or consumption of the recalled ham, so we urge victims to seek legal counsel immediately. We are demanding that the food production companies reimburse our clients for their doctor’s bills, lost earnings, and pain and suffering.
