CASE ALERT: Tasigna (nilotinib) Lawsuits

Our team of attorneys is currently investigating claims that Tasigna (nilotinib) use may be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis.

What We Know About Tasigna

Tasigna is prescribed to treat a rare form of cancer, Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Tasigna is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Co. of Basel, Switzerland. The FDA first approved Tasigna for use in the US in 2007.

Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries. Its symptoms include:

  • Chest pain
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in your arms or legs
  • Leg pain when walking
  • Difficulty speaking or slurred speech
  • Temporary vision loss in one eye
  • Drooping muscles in your face
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney failure
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

Multiple scientific journal articles have noted a potential link between Tasigna and atherosclerosis, including a 2011 article in the American Journal of Hematology, and a 2017 article in Leukemia.

In April 2013, Novartis issued a public communication in collaboration with Health Canada, warning that, “[c]ases of atherosclerosis-related conditions have been reported during clinical trials and post marketing experience with the use of TASIGNA.” Novartis also included information warning about atherosclerosis in Tasigna’s Consumer Information Leaflet (CIL) in Canada.

To date, Novartis has not issued a public communication in the US warning that cases of atherosclerosis-related conditions have been reported with the use of Tasigna. And to date, Tasigna’s US label does not warn that cases of atherosclerosis-related conditions have been reported with the use of Tasigna.
