What We Know About Xeljanz
The FDA has approved Xeljanz to treat multiple conditions:
- 2012 – Approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis
- 2017 – Approved to treat psoriatic arthritis
- 2018 – Approved to treat ulcerative colitis
The FDA required Pfizer—Xeljanz’s manufacturer—to conduct a safety clinical trial evaluating Xeljanz users’ risk of serious heart-related events, cancer, and infections.
On February 25, 2019, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication alerting that the safety clinical trial found an increased risk of blood clots in the lungs and death for Xeljanz users treating for rheumatoid arthritis with a 10 mg twice daily dose. On July 25, 2019, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication announcing that it approved new Xeljanz warnings about the increased risk of blood clots and death for patients using Xeljanz with a 10 mg twice daily dose.
On February 4, 2021, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication alerting that preliminary results from the safety clinical trial show that compared to TNF inhibitor users Xeljanz users have an increased risk of:
